What would you think of an “open source” government?
There are several great open source systems. Linix is one. Wikipedia is sort of another. They both have a backbone, but anyone can add to them, change, modify, review, edit, etc.
So, what if we were to create an open source democracy. Bills could be collectivly written by citizens. Voting could occur on a regular basis from home via email or telephone voting. As citizens we could be much more involved with the inner workings of our government, while giving the political engines, lobbiests, and political intrests a kick to the curb. In a sense all of use would be politicians (isn’t that what a democracy is all about anyway?).
200 years ago when the country was founded, something like this would have been impossible, however today it’s not such a strech of the imagination and it’s in progress in the private sector.
I’m not saying this would completly eliminate the politicians, but I like the idea and it’s a step in the right direction. Your thoughts???
An interesting idea, but what is really happening is that citizens are allowing "open sourcing" of themselves, through email, credit card receipts, cell phone use, electronic medical records, TiVo use, and much more.
Not only is there power in data collection, but there’s also power in manipulating public discourse and opinion using the methods perfected by the ad and polling industries. This is really the trend in the US — toward centralized power in the hands of the few.

Hi Hibby,
As an American, you should be aware that your own founding fathers had an extreme dislike for democracy because they believed that democracy was tantamount to mob-rule.
James Madison stated that the only way for his system of government to succeed was if the educated and informed participated, and uninformed dropped out. He was correct.
I’m sorry, but I cannot think of a greater disaster that what you propose. Contrary to the old saying (and what you imply) the "Voice of the people IS NOT the voice of God."
The sad fact is, the vast majority of people are tragically ill informed about complicated issues, and as a result have a tendency to make decisions based on visceral inputs instead. Do you really want laws formulated and enacted by a crowd who are basically operating on "gut instincts?" I don’t. But such a widespread enfranchisement of governmental power to the people would result in it.
I stand with the American Founders and say this is a plan that will not work.
Cheers, mate.

decoded from the missing x-files,
It appears that this system has started. Check out http://www.metagovernment.org for the full description. It looks like they’re going far beyond a simple wiki. They have a scoring system, so that the more you have to offer, the more you get heard. Amazing idea, really, but it looks like they’re just getting started. But now that the cat’s out of the bag; I think we’re done with old forms of government. It will probably take a while, but how can this idea be stopped?
